The Jam Project
With the support and guidance of the the Casa Llanta Fund (Earthship Pitaya Festival organizers), Rootham Gourmet Preserves (Canada), and the Rotary Club of Guelph South, the women in El Carizal have formed Condimentos Del Carizal, or "The Jam Project." You can support the El Carizal community by purchasing the co-op's home-made jam made from locally grown fruit whenever you’re in San Juan del Sur. We’re working to get the product up to export quality, but for now, you’ll have to support the ladies by coming to Nicaragua to be a buyer.
Casa Llanta Fund
All proceeds from the Earthship Pitaya Festival go toward the Casa Llanta Fund, and the fund’s primary long term endeavor at this point is working in combination with Comunidad Connect to host English classes at both Casa Llanta and the Escuela Carlos Guzman in El Carizal.
Classes are currently twice a week from 2:00-3:30pm, but we’re in the process of adding more classes, and more opportunities for learning for the adults of the community. We have hosted several “simple business practices” lessons, as well as English lessons for the women of Condimentos Carizal to facilitate sales to cruise ship passengers and other English speaking clients that the women encounter in town.
Many thanks to Mara Jacobsen and her posse of volunteers from Comunidad Connect that have helped this program grow so quickly and positively affect so many people. With our current budget of just $150/month we’re able to provide twice-weekly lessons to all 50+ kids in El Carizal, but we need your help to keep this going.
